Nonfunctioning Options: A Closer Look.
Cizek, Gregory J.; Robinson, K. Lynne; O'Day, Denis M.
Educational and Psychological Measurement, v58 n4 p605-11 Aug 1998

Results provide additional support for the benefits of eliminating nonfunctioning options, such as enhanced score reliability, reduced testing time, potential for broader domain sampling, and increased validity of score interpretation.
