Rae, Gordon – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
Analyses of artificial data involving repeated, related binary measures to different samples suggest that Tideman's generalized chi-square statistic and conventional repeated-measures analysis of variance do not produce conflicting outcomes. Provided the appropriate assumptions are met, analysis of variance may provide a more versatile approach.…

Shine II, Lester C. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The Shine-Bower single subject ANOVA is extended to a multivariate case, with one example assuming between-variate dependencies among within-subject errors and the second assuming no between-variate dependencies among within-subject errors. Standard and simplified multivariate ANOVA procedures are used, respectively. (Author/CM)

Smith, Philip L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
Monte Carlo methods are used to explore the accuracy of a method for establishing confidence intervals for variance component estimates in generalizability studies. Previous research has shown that variance component estimation errors due to sampling are often larger than suspected. (Author/CM)

Smith, Philip L.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
An observation instrument designed to be applicable across teaching situations (both grade levels and educational strategies) is presented with evidence regarding its efficiency and generalizability. The dependability of scores yielded is assessed by a generalizability study, and recommendations concerning number and item types in the measure are…

Tarling, Roger – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The Mean Cost Rating, P(A) from Signal Detection Theory, Kendall's rank correlation coefficient tau, and Goodman and Kruskal's gamma measures of predictive power are compared and shown to be different transformations of the statistic S. Gamma is generally preferred for hypothesis testing. Measures of association for ordered contingency tables are…

Waldman, David A.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
A factor analysis was performed on data from the University Residence Environmental Scales (URES). Although 10 meaningful factors were derived, only 50 of the original items were retained as marker items. Only 36 percent of the variance was accounted for by the 10 factors. (Author/BW)

Cotter, Kay Lillig; Raju, Nambury S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
Eight formula-based estimates of population squared cross-validity and nine estimates of factor scores were compared with estimates from the conventional cross-validation procedure. Burket's and Rozeboom's formula-based estimates of population squared cross-validity in combination with a factor score method offer the most for practitioners…

Friedman, Herbert – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
A concise table is presented based on a general measure of magnitude of effect which allows direct determinations of statistical power over a practical range of values and alpha levels. The table also facilitates the setting of the research sample size needed to provide a given degree of power. (Author/CM)

Dillon, Ronna F.; Donow, Carolyn – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
College undergraduates were given Zelniker and Jeffrey's modification of the Matching Familiar Figures Test to assess its psychometric credibility and construct validity for adult problem solvers. The modified test has improved internal consistency and stability over the original. The construct's possible correlation with general problem solving…

Sypher, Howard E.; Applegate, James L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which Crockett's Role Category Questionnaire (RCQ) is confounded by verbal ability. Participants included 285 undergraduates from a large southern university. The results show the RCQ to be independent of the verbal abilities measures. (Author/BW)

Burke, Michael J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
A model was proposed to examine the effects of mathematical aptitude and academic orientation on performance. The calculated path coefficients did not strongly support the model. Mathematical aptitude has a direct effect on college performance, whereas the effect of academic orientation was mediated by high school performance and mathematical…

Plake, Barbara S.; Parker, Claire S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
A shortened version of the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) was developed. It yielded a coefficient alpha reliability estimated at .98, correlated .97 with the original MARS, and showed relationships with state, trait, and test anxiety parallel to the original MARS. It should be useful for mathematical course-related applications.…

Suddick, David E.; Collins, Burton A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
Two tests of the Descriptive Tests of Mathematics Skills (DTMS) were employed for screening and placement of business majors. For calculus and statistics courses, the average performance level of the students who had passed the DTMS was significantly higher than that for students who had successfully remediated their identified weakness.…

Abbott, Robert D.; Perkins, David – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
In three studies, college students evaluated their instructor on student-rating-of-instruction items. Based upon item content and a component analysis of the item intercorrelations, four scales were constructed. They were judged to possess an acceptable degree of internal consistency and construct validity to be useful in further research.…

Watkins, David – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
An extension of Tinto's model of the college dropout process was tested with freshmen at an Australian university. The college entrance examination was a relatively valid predictor of whether students will pass, achieve honors, or fail or withdraw. Nonintellective factors were not valid predictors of academic progress. (Author/BW)
