Peer reviewedReynolds, Cecil R. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
A modified multitrait-multimethod validation matrix was generated to evaluate the construct validity of the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS). Results were consistent with the use of RCMAS as a measure of chronic, manifest anxiety levels in children. Large correlations occurred with other trait measures of anxiety. (Author/PN)

Peer reviewedSid, Albert Kay Won; Lindgren, Henry Clay – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The NachNaff scale is a 30-item questionnaire requiring examinees to choose between self-descriptions consistent with either need for achievement or need for affiliation. The NachNaff scores were positively correlated with grade point average for both sexes (n= 164). (Author/PN)

Peer reviewedRobertson, Donald U.; Hyde, Janet S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The 10 subscales of the Family Environment Scale did not emerge as 10 factors of the family environment. Seven new subscales were proposed: conflict, group cohesion, structure, religion, activities, verbal-intellectual orientation, and protestant ethic. The first four factors replicated well; the last three factors replicated moderately well.…

Peer reviewedRichardson, Virginia; Partridge, Susan – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
Based upon a sample of 1,428 randomly selected adults, this study provided evidence regarding the appropriateness of the Thematic Apperception Test in assessing interpersonal processes and examined whether the individual concerns expressed by respondents reflect their covert needs or their behavioral inclinations. (Author/PN)

Peer reviewedPowers, Stephen; Crowder, Christopher – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The factorial structure of the California Achievement Test subtests appears to consist of only one common factor in each grade. This study indicates that there is considerable overlap among the subtests and that there is minimal support for the use of subtest scores as measures of independent constructs. (Author/PN)

Peer reviewedPlake, Barbara S.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The use of the Estes Reading Attitude Scale as a measure of academic attitude of fourth-, fifth-, and sixth- grade Mexican-American and Anglo student groups did not lead to substantial bias in test score interpretation. These results indicate that responses on the test as a whole can be judged as valid. (Author/PN)

Peer reviewedValencia, Richard R. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA) appears to be an effective predictor of school achievement for 31 English-speaking second-grade Mexican-American children. High Pearson product-moment correlations were obtained between MSCA and the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills. (Author/PN)

Peer reviewedAlvi, Sabir A.; Khan, Sar B. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The Career Maturity Inventory was administered to students in a rural Ontario high school to determine the validity of the relationship of the students' scores to: (1) performance in a cooperative work-study program, (2) overall grade-point average, and (3) level of satisfaction with the work-study program. (Author/PN)

Peer reviewedBest, Steve; Knapp-Lee, Lisa – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
Similar scales on the California Occupational Preference System (COPSystem) Interest Inventory and the Kuder General Interest Survey were compared in terms of correlations between the scales. The results of comparing the three highest interest areas are interpreted as supporting the construct validity of the two instruments. (Author/PN)

Peer reviewedDaniel, Frank R, Jr.; Wagner, Edwin E. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
Subjects classified into one of six Holland personality types on the basis of the Vocational Preference Inventory high-point codes differed significantly with respect to absolute and relative number of responses on certain Hand Test scoring variables. These results provide evidence for the construct validity of the postulated vocational types.…

The scores of a sample of 116 first-grade rural Georgia pupils from a reading attitude inventory were correlated .18 with the reading composite scores on the Metropolitan Achievement Test. Coefficients of .48 and .32 were found for females and blacks respectively. The low degree of correspondences limited practical significance. (Author/PN)

The validity of spelling tests in several formats was investigated against the criterion of an estimate of spelling accuracy in ranked writing samples. The correlation between writing samples and spelling production was greater than with recognition of correct spelling. Variations in reliability and rankings were not responsible for the…

Peer reviewedMisLevy, Robert J.; Bock, R. Darrell – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
An alternative biweight estimator based on Tukey's is examined in which (1) test disturbances are not assumed to be the same for all subjects, (2) each response is utilized proportional to its value, and (3) the biweight and maximum likelihood estimate agree when no disturbances are present. Smaller mean-squared errors are shown. (Author/CM)

Formulae and graphs are presented allowing computation of the variances of three prototypical distributions over a finite number of categories. The uses of the variances of the maximum variance distribution, the uniform distribution and a unimodal triangular distribution to make inferences about distribution shapes are shown in several examples.…
