Coombs' formulation of Data Quadrants, and Runkle and McGrath's adaptation, were found to be incomplete. The third dichotomy was nonfunctional in half the Quadrants, resulting in inconsistent interpretation of the proximity element. The category "comparison between points and dyads" should be added to complete the logical classification scheme.…

Computer programs for analysis of covariance use classical experimental, regression, or hierarchical methods of least squares. In a 3 X 3 factorial experiment with equal cell frequencies, three solutions yielded different sums of squares for main effects although correlation between variables was negligible and cell frequencies were equal.…

Peer reviewedKaiser, Henry F.; Cerny, Barbara A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
A simplified mathematical and computational treatment of the canonical correlational analysis of two-way contingency tables is provided. (Author)

Peer reviewedHuberty, Carl J.; Mourad, Salah A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
Real data are used to illustrate the comparison of two estimators for the square of a population correlation coefficient and the true validity of a sample prediction equation. Interpretive approaches to, and problems in, multiple correlation/prediction estimation are discussed. (Author/BW)

The Weighted H Index Delegate Discriminant Analysis method (WHIDD-analysis) is presented. It is rather similar to Holley's G-analysis, but does not utilize any component analysis and is thus cheaper and simpler to use. The WHIDD-analysis uses the weighted H-index as the E-correlation coefficient. (Author/BW)

When analyzing a squared multiple correlation coefficient, an investigator may be interested in determining whether it is above or below a known constant, rather than testing the null hypothesis. This paper gives the sample sizes required for answering this question when indifference zone formulation of the problem is used. (Author/BW)

Peer reviewedSchriesheim, Chester A.; Denisi, Angelo S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
Two types of questionnaire formats' measuring leadership variables were examined: one with items measuring the same dimensions grouped together and the second with items measuring the same dimensions distributed randomly. The random condition showed superior convergent and discriminant validity, as assessed by multitrait-multimethod and analysis…

Ratings of student performance for two essay questions rendered by professors of English and by professors in other disciplines were compared for reliability and concurrent validity. It was concluded that the reliability and validity of the ratings of the two groups were nearly comparable. (Author/BW)

This study examined (1) the predictive validity of the Differential Aptitude Tests (DAT) relative to the engineering, mathematics, and science grades and cumulative grade point averages of high school seniors in engineering; and (2) the differential validity of the eight DAT scales in comparing high and low achievers. (Autor/BW)

Peer reviewedMoore, Michael – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
Remmers' Attitude toward Any Practice Scale was used to measure undergraduates' attitudes toward recycling, gambling, and keeping a pet. Ambivalence scores, in addition to traditional attitude scores, were obtained. The coefficients of concurrent validity were considerably higher for respondents who scored low in ambivalence. (Author/BW)

To assess the stability of the factor structure of the Instructional Improvement Questionnaire (IIQ), factor analyses were run for 1973, 1974, and 1975 results, partialling out three variables: expected grade, percent taking the course as an elective, and student's year. The factors were stable over the three years. (Author/BW)

Peer reviewedGussett, James C. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive validity of the College Entrance Examination Board Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the College Entrance Examination Board Achievement Test scores in the prediction of scores on various subject area College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests. (Author/BW)

A multitrait-multimethod matrix was computed to compare the descriptions of 10 traits (leisure activities) obtained by using the Leisure Activities Questionnaire (LAQ) and the Paragraphs about Leisure (PAL). The two procedures revealed a high degree of convergent and discriminant validity for the two instruments. (Author/BW)

Hit rates obtained in two cross-validation administrations of the Leisure Activity Questionnaire (LAQ) and the Paragraphs about Leisure (PAL) were determined. It was concluded that use of PAL, with results reported in terms of factor scores, is in the most valid and parsimonious measurement strategy of those investigated. (Author/BW)

A 34-item scale entitled Statistics Attitude Survey (SAS) was developed and administered to three samples of students taking a beginning statistics course. Analyses showed that the scale was highly homogeneous and that total scale scores had moderate correlations with statistics grades. (Author)
