Three numerical coefficients for analyzing the validity and reliability of ratings are described. Each coefficient is computed as the ratio of an obtained to a maximum sum of differences in ratings. The relation between incorrect option choice and estimated ability level was examined for two widely used aptitude tests, the Scholastic Aptitude Test, and the Graduate Record Examination. This study investigated the meaning of these counts, using 943 accountants as raters. A definition of test validity as the ratio of a covariance term to a variance term, analogous to the classical definition of test reliability, is proposed.
