Singer, Sandra; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
An eight test battery was constructed to measure four specific cognitive abilities in preschool children: verbal skill, memory, perceptual speed, and spatial ability. Based on results of factor analyses of the testing of 98 three year olds, a shorter version, consisting of four tests, was devised which shows promising validity. (Author/BS)

Darakjian, Gregory P.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
In a longitudinal investigation of 179 seventh graders, the current investigation covers a surviving sample of eleventh graders. Predictive validity coefficients of five Dimensions of Self-Concept (DOSC), Form S subscales were ascertained relative to total grade point average (GPA) and to GPA in several subjects during three enrollment periods.…

Suddick, David E.; Collins, Burton A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
The Proficiency Examination Program (PEP) of the American College Testing Program is used to place diploma nurses into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at an upper-division university. This study found PEP tests were valid for this purpose by two criteria: academic success and retention. (Author/BS)

McDonald, Edward Ray – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
This study investigated: (1) the relationship between academic achievement and student-faculty personality congruence in terms of field dependence; and (2) field dependence predictability by age, sex, and cumulative grade point average. The Group Embedded Figures Test identified the field dependence levels of 386 community college student and…

Powers, Stephen; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
The Mathematics Attribution Scale-Algebra (MAS) was designed to assess attributions to ability, effort, task, and environment for success or failure in algebra. The study examined the reliability and validity of the MAS with high ability high school students. Results present a complicated picture of the psychometric properties of the MAS. (Author)

Choroszy, Melisa; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
The Mathematics Attribution Scale (MAS) (Algebra) was designed to assess attributions of success and failure in algebra to ability, effort, task, and environment. This study examined the MAS (Algebra) for a separate dimension of attributes for success and a dimension of attributes for failure. The two hypothesized dimensions did not emerge.…

Knapp-Lee, Lisa; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
This study evaluates the relationship of the Career Occupational Preference System, Interest Inventory, Form P (COPS-P) and the Theme and Basic Interest scales of the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory (SCII) to provide construct validity data. Computed scale correlations for a college student sample (n=122) support the theoretical constructs…

Kingma, Johannes; Reuvekamp, Johan – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
The relationship between seriation tasks and number line comprehension tasks is reported. Types of tasks administered were six seriation tasks derived from Piaget, six seriation tasks provided with irrelevant cues, and number line comprehension tasks. Stochastic Mokken scale analysis indicated selection of six original seriation tasks formed a…

Frary, Robert B.; Zimmerman, Donald W. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
The correlation between bias components of test scores and unbiased observed scores is shown to be an effective predictor of changes in reliability and validity resulting from elimination of bias. Plausible assumptions about value of correlation and size of related variance components indicate that reducation in reliability and validity is a…

Morey, Leslie C.; Agresti, Alan – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
An adjustment to the Rand statistic, which will allow comparison across different levels for number of clusters found within a classification, is proposed. This adjustment permits the user to compare several different classifications with respect to classification agreement, while correcting for the contribution of chance to any observed…

Algina, James; Olejnik, Stephen F. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
The Welch-James procedure may be used to test hypothesis on means, when independent samples from populations with heterogenous variances are available. Summation formulas for the Welch-James procedure are presented for the 2x2 design. Matrix formulas that permit routine application of the procedure to crossed factorial designs are presented.…

Yarnold, Paul R. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
Unreliable profiles impose the difficulty that ordinal and interval relations among the individual's scores become uncertain or unstable. A profile reliability coefficient is derived to estimate the relative expected extent of this ordinal and interval "inversion" for any profile of K measures. (Author/DWH)

Dixon, Paul N.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
The influence of scale format on results was examined. Two Likert type formats, one with all choice points defined and one with only end-points defined, were administered. Each subject completed half the items in each format. Results indicated little difference between forms, nor did subjects indicate a format preference. (Author/DWH)

Peled, Zimra – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
The multidimensional structure of verbal comprehension test items was investigated. Empirical evidence was provided to support the theory that item tasks are multivariate-multiordered composites of faceted components: language, contextual knowledge, and cognitive operation. Linear and circular properties of cylindrical manifestation were…

Willson, Victor L.; Reynolds, Cecil R. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
Samples in research on individual and group differences may be selected based on whole scores which differ from the population mean. Children are diagnosed in clinical practice with a whole score. These procedures produce regression to the population mean which can affect accuracy and adequacy of part score interpretations. (Author/DWH)
