Schurr, K. Terry; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1989
Relationships among National Teacher Examinations (NTE) Communication Skills and General Knowledge test scores, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator characteristics, self-reported academic problems, and 14 skill self-ratings were examined for 161 college teaching majors. After several other variables were controlled, personality variables accounted for a…

Schriesheim, Chester A.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1989
Three studies explored the effects of grouping versus randomized items in questionnaires on internal consistency and test-retest reliability with samples of 80, 80, and 100, respectively, university students and undergraduates. The 2 correlational and 1 experimental studies were reasonably consistent in demonstrating that neither format was…

Bass, Bernard M.; Avolio, Bruce J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1989
Eighty-seven employed people completed a graphic rating or a forced ranking questionnaire describing their immediate superiors. Transformational and transactional leadership constructs were examined in relation to the participant's leadership prototype, leniency in rating, and general satisfaction. Overall, forced ranking yielded more independent…

Tollefson, Nona; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1989
The relationship among 225 graduate and undergraduate students' attitudes toward effective teaching, student perceptions of teachers' attitudes, and ratings by students of teachers' effectiveness was examined. Variance in ratings explained by student-teacher attitude similarity was too small to be a biasing factor in student ratings of their…

Bachelor, Patricia A.; Bachelor, Barry G. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1989
The existence of higher-order factors within the cognition and convergent production operations and product dimensions of the structure-of-intellect model of J. P. Guilford was investigated. Data from 240 aviation officer candidates and Naval air cadets were reanalyzed via maximum likelihood confirmatory factor analysis, using the LISREL program.…

Gold, Yvonne; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1989
Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses investigated the dimensionality of a modification of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The sample of 147 fifth-year college students in an elementary teacher training program demonstrated the multidimensional construct validity of the new instrument--the College Student Survey--within the theoretical…

Silver, N. Clayton; Dunlap, William P. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1989
A Monte Carlo simulation examined the Type I error rates and power of four tests of the null hypothesis that a correlation matrix equals the identity matrix. The procedure of C. J. Brien and others (1984) was found to be the most powerful test maintaining stable empirical alpha values. (SLD)

Benito, Juana Gomez – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1989
This study of 852 subjects in Barcelona (Spain) between 4 and 9 years old estimated the degree of consistency among elements of the Borelli-Oleron Performance Scale by taking into account item clusters and subtest clusters. The internal consistency of the subtests rose when all ages were analyzed jointly. (SLD)

Kaplan, David – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1989
The power of the likelihood ratio test in multiple group confirmatory factor analysis under partial measurement invariance was studied in a population study with a six-variable, two-factor model where a specification error existed for one group. Results are discussed in terms of strategies of multiple group modeling. (SLD)

Willett, John B. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1989
The superiority of multiwave designs over two-wave designs in the measurement of individual growth and change is explored by examining the increase in reliability afforded by collecting additional waves of data. Results are discussed in terms of the impact on longitudinal studies of individual change. (SLD)

Huberty, Carl J.; Morris, John D. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1988
The multitude of procedures for testing hypotheses about mean contrasts often presented in statistical methods textbooks is unwarranted. This article demonstrates that nearly all such research can be handled by a single contrast test statistic often attributed to R. A. Fisher. (TJH)

Green, Dianne E.; Walkey, Frank H. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1988
The factor structure of the Maslach Burnout Inventory was analyzed via principal components analysis of data from America (n=469 teachers) and New Zealand (n=244 female nurses). The analysis, which included varimax rotations, indicated that the inventory measures depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, and lack of personal accomplishment. (TJH)

Hill, Peter C.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1988
A variant of a technique for enhancing the validity of self-reports--the generalized bogus pipeline--was investigated in three experiments, with a total of 273 undergraduates. The construct validity and the efficacy of the technique were supported. The effect size and effects of anonymity were also addressed. (TJH)

Schweizer, Karl – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1988
Reference-reliability relates variability due to change and error. It indicates whether some suspected change can be reliably differentiated from random fluctuations. A means by which the process of change can be measured at different points in time is outlined, using empirical data. (TJH)

Benson, Jeri; Rentsch, Joan – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1988
Confirmatory factor analysis techniques assessed several structural models that have been reported regarding the construct validity of the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale. Responses of 885 Black, White, and Hispanic students in grades three-six suggest that the scale's construct validity is a function of content and manner of phrasing.…
