Pedagogy, Neoliberalism and Postmodernity: Reflections on Freire's Later Work
Roberts, Peter
Educational Philosophy and Theory, v35 n4 p451-465 Oct 2003
In the years following Paulo Freire's death in May 1997, there has been no shortage of published material on his work. From brief tributes and biographical accounts to full-length critiques in academic journals and books, much has been written about this influential scholar and activist. Part of the explanation for this ongoing interest lies in the fact that Freire's legacy as a writer has not yet been completed: several books have already been published posthumously, and more are likely to emerge in the future. The translation of interviews, articles, letters and other texts hitherto only available in Portuguese into English will ensure that further publications under Freire's name, and commentaries on them, will continue to appear for several years to come. This essay discusses several books released in 1998 and 1999 and locates them in the wider corpus of Freire's published writings. Drawing on material from the books under review plus other later works, the author analyses Freire's position on oppression, liberation and the politics of difference. Freire's case for "progressive postmodernism" is outlined and considered in relation to the emergence of neoliberalism as the dominant policy narrative of this time. He concludes that while Freire adopted a number of insights from postmodern thinkers, the modernist roots of his ontology, epistemology and ethic could still be detected in his later years.
