Hannah Arendt on Authority: Conservatism in Education Reconsidered.
Gordon, Mordechai
Educational Theory, v49 n2 p161-80 Spr 1999
Democratic educators should take Arendt's conservatism seriously. Arendt's conception of authority shares fundamental assumptions with mainstream conservative views, although her political philosophy is heavily influenced by existentialism. This paper argues that Arendt's view of authority in education constitutes an alternative to other approaches and explores the implications of her views for the debate on democratic education. (SM)
