Five basic features of PSI are emphasized: written materials (i.e., study guides) specifically designed to supplement existing traditional texts; a "mastery" philosophy of learning which allows the learner to progress only after he or she has successfully demonstrated complete knowledge of the previous material; self-pacing; the use of lectures for learner motivation instead of learner information; and the use of students to help tutor other students.
