Nesher, Pearla; Hershkovitz, Sara; Novotna, Jarmila – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2003
Identifies factors affecting problem solving strategies in the case of a multiplicative comparative situation involving three unknown quantities whose sum is known, and in which comparison relations between two pairs of the quantities are given. Proposes a model of the complexity of a word problem about such situation to analyze solution…

Hershkovitz, Sara; Nesher, Pearla – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1996
Comparison of the effectiveness of two computerized environments, Schemes for Problem Analysis (SPA) and Algebraic Proposer (AP), with two sixth-grade classes found that in solving easy word problems, both software systems were equally helpful, but in harder word problems, those students who learned with SPA experienced more success than those who…

Nesher, Pearla – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1976
The effect of four variables (number of steps, superfluous information, verbal cue, and question) on problem solving performance was investigated. A total of 800 junior high students from five schools responded to four different types of questions. Three variables were found to be significant: questions, steps, and superfluous information. (DT)

Nesher, Pearla; Katriel, Tamar – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1977
The paragraph unit that constitutes an addition or subtraction word problem text is discussed and the logical conditions such problems must fulfill are formulated. An attempt is then made to formulate the semantic conditions which will define well-formed addition and subtraction texts. (MN)

Nesher, Pearla; Peled, Irit – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1986
The process of transition from a novice's state to that of an expert, in the domain of decimals, is described in terms of explicit, intermediate, and transitional rules which are consistent yet erroneous. Data from students in grades 6-9 are included. (MNS)

Nesher, Pearla; Hershkovitz, Sara – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1994
Studied schemes involved in solving two-step arithmetic word problems in (n=1824) elementary schoolchildren in Israel. Compound schemes and combinations of operations were found to affect the difficulty level of the problems. Appendix includes two versions of the test instrument. (Contains 17 references.) (MKR)

Nesher, Pearla; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1984
This paper proposes a semantic analysis in which meanings of word problems are structures that include class and order relations, and suggests a hypothesis of developmental levels that can account for children's performance of these problems at various ages. The different kinds of problems vary in the complexity of semantic structures and the…
