The crisis of mass schooling in a semiperipheral country is explored in the context of the Portuguese educational system in the 1970s and 1980s, following the installation of democracy. It is argued that studies of Mediterranean educational systems should be conducted using a model based on comparisons among similar nations. (SLD)
