Some Sex-Related Differences in the Correlates of Subject Preference in the Middle Years of Secondary Education

Subject preferences of 348 male and female secondary students in England are discussed. The conclusion is that the differences in student attitudes are due to cultural influences rather than intellectual ability. Decreasing the level of perceived subject difficulty is suggested as a means of attracting more girls to physics and chemistry. (Author/DB)
