Reducing Abstraction Level When Learning Abstract Algebra Concepts.
Hazzan, Orit
Educational Studies in Mathematics, v40 n1 p71-90 Oct 1999
Presents a theoretical framework based on interviews with undergraduate students and written questionnaires to study how undergraduate students cope with abstract algebra concepts. Indicates that students' responses can be interpreted as a result of reducing the level of abstraction. Examines the theme of reducing abstraction based on three interpretations for levels of abstraction discussed in mathematics education literature. (Contains 58 references.) (Author/ASK)
