"The Department Is Very Male, Very White, Very Old, and Very Conservative": The Functioning of the Hidden Curriculum in Graduate Sociology Departments.
Margolis, Eric; Romero, Mary
Harvard Educational Review, v68 n1 p1-32 Spr 1998
Interviews with 26 women of color in a Ph.D. program in sociology revealed two kinds of hidden curriculum in the department: the professionalization process and the reproduction of inequality. There were frequent instances of stigmatization, stereotyping, blaming the victim, exclusion, and tracking. The women found ways to resist and attempted to create alternatives. (SK)
