A content analysis of 10,279 dissertation abstracts in education from 1950 to 1990 shows that the descriptive design, predominantly in surveys, has dominated. A campus violence survey was completed by 189 students, most of whom were in a developmental studies program or an enrichment (honors) program. Internal life goals and ego identity statuses of 50 traditional and 49 nontraditional (aged over 25) college students were measured.
