Classroom behaviors of 24 primary reading teachers whose students averaged 1.27 academic years gain per 8 months instruction over the past 3-5 years were observed. The absence of replication studies and negative results in psychological journals, provoked a survey of 14 journal editors asked to tabulate submission rates; accepted/rejected rates; and of these, replication papers and papers with negative and positive results. Seven visually handicapped adolescents, literate in braille but with little or no visual reading experience, were trained in letter and word recognition by closed circuit television for two weeks. A novel cognitive style distinction is introduced: the Assimilator, who stretches established principles to meet novel tasks, and the Explorer, who seeks novel solutions even when established principles would serve.
