The distinction between teachers' and scholars' subject matter knowledge (SMK) is investigated. Objectivist epistemology, L. Shulman's (1986, 1987) dualism, and J. Dewey's (1929, 1933, 1938, 1964, 1966) account of SMK are assessed. There is no real dualism involved in the distinction, and all knowledge is, in varying ways, pedagogic. (TJH)

Results are reported from a study which compared the performance of boys and girls on both written spelling tests and proofreading-type standardized spelling tests. Findings indicate that girls, in general, spell better than boys in grades 1-6. (IAH)

Quantitative results from a study involving 78 elementary students suggest that content-related attitudes do not significantly affect subjects' reading comprehension. However, qualitative results suggest that attitudes may affect reading comprehension in qualitatively different ways. (IAH)
