An investigation of the possibility of teaching students to apply mathematical heuristics to novel mathematical problems is presented. Tenth-grade students demonstrated the ability to apply one heuristic to the solution of novel problems, regardless of the vehicle used. (JMF)

A study of seventh-, ninth-, and eleventh-grade students' ability to apply letter-sound correspondence to synthetic words indicates that, although by seventh grade, students have largely mastered letter-sound correspondences, low ability students do not approach the same mastery as average and high ability students until the eleventh grade. Analysis of oral reading error patterns is an integral step in the diagnosis of reading disabilities. Effects of passage difficulty on first- and third-grade students oral reading error patterns was investigated. Two methods of error analysis were employed: quantitative and qualitative. The impact of answer changing on the test scores of students studying educational statistics is investigated. The results show that students who make changes in their original responses significantly improve their overall test performance, and high-scoring students make a greater number of changes than low-scoring students. Teachers' perceptions of power to influence curriculum policy were surveyed over 120 teachers in three suburban school districts of varying socioeconomic levels.
