Three passages that differed in accessibility but not linguistic difficulty were read by 52 11-year-old remedial readers, focusing on words read correctly. Readers were able to use linguistic cues to solve difficult words. Context dependency was affected both by decoding ability and text accessibility. (SK)

Ratings of a British rural comprehensive school were obtained from 98 of 170 parents of new entrants, 93 of 180 other parents, and 198 of 300 community members. Cumulatively, the most highly rated items were work emphasis, subject help, teaching method, exam results, discipline, staff demeanor, pupil appearance, and pupil demeanor. (SK)

A study of 184 pupils at a British comprehensive school (59 percent white, 41 percent Asian) showed that, in English, math, and science, white students were generally assigned to higher ability groups disproportionately to the racial composition of the sample. (SK)

Teachers in seven Australian secondary schools identified themselves as users (n=102) or nonusers (n=250) of computers in class. Users were encouraged by access to computers and software and self-motivation. Nonusers lacked confidence with computers, lacked time to review software, and had access difficulties. (SK)

A sample of 175 British 7-year olds was interviewed, and 114 were reinterviewed at age 11. Results showed teaching and fighting to be common in school life. More boys than girls were teased or involved in fighting. Although over half said racial teasing occurred, very few said it happened to them. Retaliation was the most frequent coping strategy.…
