Discusses a study that compared the basic educational skills of Asian children living in the United Kingdom to that of the indigenous White majority. In general, found that Asians achieved nearly average levels, and in socially disadvantaged areas, educational retardation was greater among the indigenous majority. (JOW)

Examines the extent to which grades derived from a conventional norm-referenced examination can be interpreted in terms of criterion-referenced performance assessments of different abilities and skills. Describes a study that investigated the effects of promising pupils that a letter would be sent to their parents if they showed "good" progress in English comprehension.
