Assessment of Student Problem-Solving on Ill-Defined Tasks.
Leighton, Jacqueline P.; Rogers, W. Todd; Maguire, Thomas O.
Alberta Journal of Educational Research, v45 n4 p409-27 Win 1999
An "ill-defined" informal performance task was constructed to evaluate secondary students' problem solving in mathematics. The task for 170 students in grades 9 and 10 was to evaluate other students' solutions to two mathematics questions. Higher-achieving students generally preferred responses reflecting multiple approaches to problem solving, but most students exhibited problem-solving biases. Contains 27 references. (Author/SV)
