A Sociocultural Perspective on Children's Understanding of Historical Change: Comparative Findings from Northern Ireland and the United States.
Barton, Keith C.
American Educational Research Journal, v38 n4 p881-913 Win 2001
Classroom observations and interviews with 60 children, aged 6 to 12 years, in Northern Ireland and comparisons with previous U.S. research show the extent to which specific forms of historical representation shape understanding of change over time. As was consistent with differing historical representations, children in Northern Ireland are less likely to encounter the kinds of national narratives common in the United States. Discusses implications for presenting historical information. (SLD)
