African American Teaching in the South: 1940-1960.
Walker, Vanessa Siddle
American Educational Research Journal, v38 n4 p751-79 Win 2001
Provides a historiography of African American teaching in the southern U.S. from 1940-1960 using a variety of sources, including a study of Georgia teachers from this era. Findings show that African American teachers worked in unfair and discriminatory positions, but did not allow themselves to become victims of their environments. They saw themselves as trained professionals who embraced a series of ideas about how to teach African American children. (SLD)
