Amartya Sen's Capability Approach and Education
Walker, Melanie
Educational Action Research, v13 n1 p103-110 Mar 2005
The human capabilities approach developed by the economist Amartya Sen links development, quality of life and freedom. This article explores the key ideas in the capability approach of: capability, functioning, agency, human diversity and public participation in generating valued capabilities. It then considers how these ideas relate specifically to education, before arguing that participatory action research might be a methodology for implementing and evaluating capabilities in education as a way of "doing" fairness and equality in education.
