Beyond Essentialism: The Complexity of Language in Teaching Mathematics to Latina/o Students.
Gutierrez, Rochelle
American Educational Research Journal, v39 n4 p1047-088 Win 2002
Studied the work of three high school mathematics teachers who have advanced large numbers of their Latina/o students through the curriculum. Findings suggest that some strategies used at lower grade levels are also effective with high school students, including group work, work in the primary language, supplementing textbook materials, and building on previous knowledge.
