Academic Outcomes of Ability Grouping among Junior High School Students in Hong Kong.
Cheung, Chau-Kiu; Rudowicz, Elizabeth
Journal of Educational Research, v96 n4 p241-54 Mar-Apr 2003
Collected data from 2,720 Hong Kong junior high school students and obtained teachers' reports about students' academic achievement, ability grouping, and the classes' ability level. Results revealed no significant detrimental effect caused by the ability-grouped class and the ability level of the ability-grouped class. Students in classes that were more homogeneous according to past achievement tended to have significantly higher subsequent academic achievement and self-esteem. (SM)
