Evidence-Based Reform in Education: A Response to Robert Slavin
Bridges, David
European Educational Research Journal, v7 n1 p129-133 2008
This is a response to an article written by Robert Slavin entitled "Evidence-Based Reform in Education: What Will It Take?" Although both the author and Slavin agreed on some points, they disagreed on the following: (1) Failure to Distinguish the Requirements of Decision Making at National and Local Levels and, with This, Over-confidence in Centralized Direction; (2) Underestimation of the Importance of Local, Contextual Knowledge and Understanding; (3) Too Narrow a Conception of What Might Count as Evidence; (4) Failure to Consider "What Should Count as Working"; (5) Failure to Acknowledge the Intrinsically Normative Character of Education and Educational Decision Making; (6) Failure to Understand the Complex Character of Argument in Support of Educational Policy and Practice; and (7) Failure to Take Account of Criticism. (Contains 2 notes.)
