Whitehurst, Grover J.; And Others – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1978
In response to the previous article, Whitehurst defends his article on imitation; it is different from Beilin's structural terms, and significant because much is known about imitation. Zimmerman challenges Beilin's interpretation of Piaget's structural assumptions. Brody maintains that children's qualitative changes in moral reasoning are best…

Brainerd, Charles J. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1978
The foundations of the cognitive developmental curriculum movement, and its recommendations for curriculum sequencing, curriculum content and teaching strategies are critically reviewed. The grounds for all proposals are purely theoretical; actual data either contradict specific proposals or provide no direct evidence. (Author/CP)

Verma, Gajendra K. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1978
Relationships between Cattell High School Personality Questionaire Factors and the adolescent version of the Wilson-Patterson Conservatism Scale were examined in a sample of 492 teenagers. In both sexes, conservatism was significantly related to a number of personality traits, which were significantly similiar to those defined by extroversion.…

Marsh, George; Desberg, Peter – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1978
Two experiments investigated the effects of pictures as first-sound or action mnemonics for learning letter-sound pairs by prereading kindergarten children. In both experiments, the mnemonics had a substantial effect during training, but this effect disappeared on a transfer test with the mnemonics removed. (Author/CP)

Kulhavy, Raymond W.; And Others – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1978
Providing contextual cues leads to more effective learning than depth of semantic processing activity. However, the positive effects of contextual cues are reduced when the subject must search for the theme during the learning activity, as opposed to having it presented before the passage. (CP)

Grabe, Mark D. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1978
Good readers and poor readers (aged 7, 9, and 11) responded to stimuli matchable by physical similarity (e.g., A-A) or by name (e.g., A-a). The lack of a significant age or reading competence interaction with the type of match was interpreted as an inability of the poor reader to reduce required visual processing through anticipation. DeMeis, Debra Kanai; Turner, Ralph R. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1978
Based on taped samples of the students' speech, 68 white elementary school teachers rated subjects on personality, quality of response, and current and future academic abilities. Black students, Black English-speaking students and unattractive students were rated consistently lower. Academic failure may result from evaluations based on race and…

White, Richard T.; Gagne, Robert M. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1978
A correspondence exists between a simplified data collection method employing results from a post test for graphic skills in kinematics, and a rigourous validation method. Examination of test responses for discrepant instances yielded further information of value. Hierarchical patterns of learning and remembering are identical. (Author/CP)

Cox, William F., Jr. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1978
To detect the underlying structural relationship or chain among certain memorized pairs, two groups of undergraduates verbally reordered previously memorized pairs of either concrete or abstract nouns. The superior performance of the concrete word subjects was attributed to the differential effect of imaginal versus verbal encoding. (Author/CP)

Feshbach, Seymour; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1977
This longitudinal study compared two predictors of reading performance: behavior rating scales and psychometric tests. Two groups of 888 and 844 middle-class kindergarten children were studied through Grade 3. Classroom and school environment were also considered. (Author/GDC)

Pichert, James W.; Anderson, Richard C. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1977
College undergraduates read stories from one of two directed perspectives or no directed perspective. An idea's significance in terms of the assigned perspective affected both initial learning and recall one week later. Schemata, or conceptual frameworks, were assumed to aid in memory and retrieval. Foch, T. T.; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1977
Psychometric evaluation of 58 reading-disabled children, matched controls, and their nuclear families was employed to identify familial patterns of impairment in cognitive abilities. Certain types of genetic transmission or a combination of causes may be responsible for reading disability. (Author/GDC)

Singleton, Louise C.; Asher, Steven R. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1977
Classroom observation and a roster-and-rating sociometric technique were used to assess social interaction among Black and White third grade students who had attended integrated schools since kindergarten. Sex was a more significant factor in determining sociometric ratings for work and play than race. (GDC)

Taxonomic category encoding was studied in 160 second and fourth grade students, both low-socioeconomic status Blacks and middle-class Whites. Three items were displayed sequentially, to be recalled later. The results provided conclusive evidence of the availability of taxonomic encoding categories in the groups sampled. (Author/GDC)
