Uses recent survey data to determine whether ethnic-racial composition of various types of higher education systems has changed from late 1970s through 1980s; and how the chances of attending various types of institutions have changed for students from different racial-ethnic backgrounds. Minority group distribution at most colleges remained steady; African Americans at elite institutions held ground but remained underrepresented. (MLH)
