In the Company of Critical Thinkers
Lent, ReLeah
Educational Leadership, v64 n2 p68-72 Oct 2006
What if we could truly engage high schools students in learning by actively involving them in research and discussion leading to concrete actions on issues that interest them? Lent describes her experiences working with student study groups composed of high school students and teachers or adult community members. Study groups differ from literature circles or book clubs in that the topic, not the text, grounds the exploration. The ultimate purpose of study groups is to think critically about a topic and come to a plan of action. Lent suggests several kinds of study groups. She provides ideas for linking action to study and for measuring what students learn in such groups.
