The National College for School Leadership in Nottingham, England, was founded to provide a national focus for school leadership development and research, become a driving force for world-class leadership, and serve as a provider and promoter of excellence and innovation in education. The College is committed to an evidence-informed approach to school leadership and leadership development and promotes the concept of distributed leadership. The College's leadership development framework recognizes five stages of leadership: middle-level leaders, emergent leaders, leaders preparing for their first headship (the equivalent of a principalship), advanced leaders, and consultant leaders. Some important lessons learned have been the importance of context, the value of coaching, and the need to keep up with best practices across the world. Leadership succession and sustainability, new roles in education leadership, and creating collaborative support systems are challenges going forward.
