On Rethinking Leadership: A Conversation with Tom Sergiovanni.
Brandt, Ron
Educational Leadership, v49 n5 p46-49 Feb 1992
Professionalism and leadership are contradictory concepts. Because Maslow and Herzberg studied mostly males, they espoused motivational theories stressing achievement and competitiveness, not caring and nurturing relationships. Although women are underrepresented in principalships, they are overrepresented in successful ones. Professionalism, norms, moral commitment, and community-building are worthy leadership substitutes.
