Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together?
O'Neil, John
Educational Leadership, v55 n4 p12-17 Dec-Jan 1997-1998
Author Beverly Daniel Tatum explains that adolescents tend to self-segregate because their racially different friends are not having (or sharing) same experiences. Many white students are oblivious to racism's power and manifestations in society. During lunch or recess, students should be able to relax with friends. However, educators should create more opportunities for positive interactions across group lines by using cooperative learning strategies in classroom. (MLH)
