What Is a Principal to Do?
Holko, William; Trenta, Louis
Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership, v7 n1 p36-47 2004
This case was developed for use in principalship preparation courses. It focuses on the ethical and procedural dilemmas inherent in trying to support a teacher who might be wrong in a conflict situation with a student and parents. Background is provided and the situation developed to the point where the principal sees the need to take action. At five points in the case, there is a break to allow students to analyze the situation and propose next steps. Students must consider what would be a fair and ethical outcome in this situation and how, ethically, to bring it about. Alternative escalating and deescalating endings are provided. Each leaves the students with questions about how best to help the teacher and her students.
