Voices of Women in the Field: Pearls of Wisdom
Blair, Meg
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership, v5 n3 p201-204 Jul 2007
As this author looks back on her career, she realizes that so much has changed, but in some respects many things have stayed the same. As a novice in a leadership role, a mentor offered her what turned out to be sterling advice. In this article, the author shares this advice and her experiences "from the field" as a woman who has had a successful career in leadership. She offers seven pearls of wisdom: (1) A good leader understands herself and her followers; (2) Have great role models; (3) Make one's followers look good; (4) Have a clear and direct communication style; (5) Be able to change leadership styles as the situation warrants; (6) Use proven tools for conflict mediation and negotiation; and (7) Know when to say, "I don't know" and "I'm sorry."
