Professional Pioneers: Women Administrators in Architectural Education
Woosnam, Margaret D.; Williams, Frankie K.
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership, v6 n2 p115-136 Apr 2008
Of the 114 accredited architecture programs within colleges and universities across America, only 18 (16%) have females in the highest administrative positions such as deans, directors, chairs, or heads. Despite this statistic, 50% of all graduates from architecture programs are female. Little is known about women administrators in architectural education, perhaps because there are so few. The findings of this qualitative study characterized the women administrators in architecture programs as pioneers in many aspects of their professional lives. Although feminist leadership theories were used as a lens and guided the current research, themes emerged from the study that point toward a potentially new, emerging theoretical construct. Each woman's journey to leadership in the male-dominated fields of higher education administration and architecture is detailed and provides insight to aspiring women in these fields.
