STEM--Beyond the Acronym
Vasquez, Jo Anne
Educational Leadership, v72 n4 p10-15 Dec 2014-Jan 2015
When most educators think of STEM education, they think of fully integrated projects seamlessly combining all four disciplines--science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Although such transdisciplinary STEM units are ideal, writes Vasquez, they are not the only way to give students valuable STEM experiences. She gives examples of two other, less-demanding approaches: multidisciplinary integration, in which two or more subject areas separately focus on a common theme; and interdisciplinary integration, in which the curriculum is organized around common concepts and skills and the lines between the disciplines become blurred. At any level, STEM makes learning more rigourous and relevant by giving students opportunities to apply the skills and knowledge they have learned.
