The Rolling Can Investigation: Towards an Explanation
Ireson, Gren; Twidle, John
International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, v36 n4 p423-428 May-Jun 2005
This paper presents a context lead approach to rotational dynamics. By using nothing more than two cans of cola the basic notions of linear velocity, angular velocity, moments of inertia and conservation of energy can be explored. The approach can be used equally well as both a demonstration or an investigative assignment. The same starting point can, by the nature of the outcome, be used with students at differing levels of mathematical development.
