State policies pertaining to the education of American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian students vary considerably in their scope and type among the states. This StateNote report examines policies found in state statutes. Additionally, states that have tribal colleges--independent colleges that are operated by the tribes--within their borders are identified, as are the tribal colleges. Overall, 20 states have policies pertaining to American Indian, Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian education, and the 36 tribal colleges can be found in 14 states.
