Enhancing Self-Management in Students with Mental Retardation: Extrinsic versus Intrinsic Procedures.
Firman, Katherine Bakken; Beare, Paul; Loyd, Robert
Education and Training in Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, v37 n2 p163-71 Jun 2002
Three middle school students with mild/moderate mental retardation utilized three self-management interventions varying in amount of external assistance to increase time-on-task behaviors. Although the more externally assisted procedures resulted in the greatest improvement, the less intrusive procedures produced only slightly reduced effect, suggesting that these students can be taught to improve and manage behaviors with minimal support.
