A Different Approach to Studying the Charge and Discharge of a Capacitor without an Oscilloscope
Ladino, L. A.
Physics Education, v48 n6 p776-781 Nov 2013
A different method to study the charging and discharging processes of a capacitor is presented. The method only requires a high impedance voltmeter. The charging and discharging processes of a capacitor are usually studied experimentally using an oscilloscope and, therefore, both processes are studied as a function of time. The approach presented in this article is essentially based on the conservation of the electric charge. Moreover, the only equipment required is a high impedance voltmeter, making the procedure a low cost experiment that can be carried out as laboratory work. The article starts by describing the discharging process in detail. The charging process is analysed similarly using the same principle.
