An Empirical Study on the Effect of School Consolidation in Rural Areas on Student Achievement
Mei, Dong; Fang, Chang; Yuanyan, Bai
Chinese Education and Society, v46 n5 p56-70 Sep-Oct 2013
With Shaanxi province as an example, this study presents empirical evidence on the effect of primary school consolidation in rural areas on student achievement, using the difference-in-differences method. The results show no significant differences in student achievement between consolidated schools and nonconsolidated schools. If student achievement can be regarded as an index of educational quality, we cannot safely conclude that the consolidation of primary schools definitively promotes the quality of education in rural areas.
