Collegiality, Collaboration and Kuleana: Complexity in a Professional Development School
Marlow, Michael P.; Kyed, Stanley; Connors, Susan
Education, v125 n4 p557 Sum 2005
We describe our school/university professional development school (PDS) partnership through the voices of the participants. We suggest that long-term professional growth and the accompanying recognition of professional self requires consideration of the complexity of the endeavor. There is general recognition of the role of collegiality and collaboration in sustaining PDS partnerships (Rice, 2002). Unique to our view is the Hawaiian concept of kuleana, that is, a responsibility to respect the needs of all players and a sense of accountability, caring, and advocacy. We contend that kuleana provides the critical foundation for collegiality and collaboration. It is only through a commitment to the complex interplay between the three components that we can maintain a community that is real and meaningful to all participants.
