A Moral Code for the Current Secular State of Affairs.
Gutierrez, Robert
Education, v125 n3 p353 Spr 2005
Responding to the prevailing approaches to moral education, generally called value clarification and emphasizing the psychological aspects of moral and ethical thinking, this article argues that such approaches are deficient and contribute to what several writers have identified as relativistic thinking among our school children and adolescents. Instead, the article argues for the adoption of a federalist moral code. This secular code identifies a set of preferred values with societal health (valuing societal survival and advancement) as a tromp value. Deduced from this overarching value is a set of hierarchical values organized into instrumental and operational categories. Along with the values, the article provides a rationale for their inclusion founded by the ideas expressed by moral thinkers of the western tradition.
