The Content and Tendencies of the Active Political Involvement of College Students (Based on the Elections of 2011 and 2012)
Zernov, D. V.; Lukonina, E. S.
Russian Education and Society, v56 n10 p66-81 Oct 2014
Until quite recently, young people were extremely passive in political life. This has been repeatedly noted in sociological studies and in the scientific literature. In particular, young people used to be extremely reluctant to take part in elections. For example, in the age group between eighteen and thirty, 47 percent took part in the election of deputies to the State Duma in 2007, substantially lower than the level of participation by the older generation--70 percent (Gorshkov and Sheregi 2010, p. 134). Moreover, researchers linked young people's participation in the political process to their situational interest in specific events rather than to conceptual thinking about political processes and problems (Vishnevskii, Trynov, and Shapkov 2009, p. 116). Active political involvement, in addition to participation in elections, is also manifested in participation in political activity; this also was not always characterized as a conscious choice. Research on the extent and kind of political involvement of college students in Russia shows that there are a number of distinct groupings within the category of Russian youth.
