Homework, Homework Everywhere: Indian Parents' Involvement with Their Children's Homework
Thirumurthy, Vidya
Childhood Education, v90 n2 p83-90 2014
Parents play a key role in children's academic success. In this article, the author describes a sample of India's middle- and working-class parents' involvement in children's academic activities and the nature of support they provide for their children. In each case, everyday activities at home, often replicating school-based activities, indicated the narrowing of the separation between school and home--in terms of pursuing both linguistic and content-specific skills. While parents' concern for their children's academic success was obvious in all cases, the nature of support they provided was wide-ranging--from intense and complex involvement to disassociated. The support parents provided was dependent on their educational, cultural, and socioeconomic background. The author's recommendations aim at achieving educational equity for learners coming from all social, economic, and cultural backgrounds in order to equip them with skills for the new millennium.
