Redefining the Vistas of Social Studies
Goldberg, Steve
Social Education, v75 n1 p4-6 Jan-Feb 2011
Twenty-five years ago the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) held its conference in Chicago. The president of NCSS that year, and the last New Yorker to hold this office, was Donald Bragaw, who was the head of the Social Studies Bureau of the New York State Education Department. In this article, the author shares the salient points of Bragaw's speech of 1985 and where social studies is today in comparison or contrast to social studies then. The author contends that by associating and professionalizing their efforts, social studies professionals can redefine the vistas of social studies and move social studies into the foreground once again.
