Integrating Outside Learning with the Classroom Experience: The Student Learning Imperative
Seidman, Alan; Brown, Stephen C.
Education, v127 n1 p109-114 Fall 2006
When asked to reflect on what they learned in college, the twenty-four recent college graduates who were interviewed did not mention specific information from the courses they attended. Instead, their responses fell into one of four categories: critical thinking and problem solving, outside activities, holding a part-time job, and experiences shared with professors and friends. Since outside classroom learning experiences are a significant part of the collegiate learning experience, a student learning imperative should be to attempt to integrate these outside experiences with the college classroom experience. This paper presents suggestions for college faculty as to how they can further student learning by integrating outside learning experiences. In addition, retention implications are discussed as research has shown how outside learning can not only enrich the student's college experience, it can also influence their decision to remain at their current school.
