"I Have a Story to Share!" Building a Writing Community through Shared Journal
Tunks, Karyn W.
Childhood Education, v88 n6 p374-381 2012
The author first learned about the Shared Journal approach as a doctoral student in the mid-1980s, and she implemented it in her own kindergarten class with great success. Two decades later, she was listening as her own graduate students introduced themselves and described their experiences with teaching writing. A young kindergarten teacher enthusiastically told the class about her approach to teaching writing, called "Shared Journal." They started a collaborative exploration of how her students responded to Shared Journal and what they were learning from this strategy. In this article, the author describes the experience of implementing Shared Journal in a kindergarten class and focuses on how young children become writers through this approach.
